The AMYVIDHYBRID+FBAS is a modern hardware project designed to enhance classic Commodore Amiga computers by addressing a key limitation of their original design: the lack of color composite video outputs. While the legendary Commodore 390229-03 Video Hybrid (also known as the VIDIOT) was essential for analog RGB output, it did not provide proper color composite or Y/C (S-Video) signals. The AMYVIDHYBRID+FBAS solves this issue, enabling Amiga enthusiasts to enjoy vibrant composite video and Y/C outputs on modern displays.

The Original Limitation: No Color Composite Output

Many classic Amiga models, such as the A500, A500+, A1000, A1500, A2000, and A3000, relied on the Commodore 390229-03 Video Hybrid for video output. However, these systems were limited to analog RGB signals and basic composite sync outputs. They lacked proper color-encoded composite video (FBAS) and Y/C (S-Video) outputs, which are essential for connecting to many TVs and monitors.

This limitation meant that users could not take full advantage of the Amiga's advanced graphics capabilities when connecting to composite or S-Video inputs. The AMYVIDHYBRID+FBAS fills this gap by adding proper color composite and Y/C outputs, ensuring compatibility with a wider range of displays.

How Does AMYVIDHYBRID+FBAS Work?

The AMYVIDHYBRID+FBAS builds on the functionality of the original Commodore 390229-03 Video Hybrid while introducing new features:

Color Composite Video (FBAS): Adds proper color-encoded composite video output, allowing connection to devices that support this standard.
Y/C (S-Video) Output: Provides a high-quality Y/C signal for sharper video on compatible displays.
RGB Channels: Retains the original hybrid's ability to convert 4-bit digital RGB signals into analog RGB output, amplified and terminated at 75 ohms.
Synchronization Signal: Ensures proper sync for all video outputs, maintaining compatibility with original Amiga hardware.
